The reasoning is classic in its clarity. If God does not exist, Kirilov is god. If God does not exist, Kirilov must kill himself. Kirilov must therefore kill himself to become god. That logic is absurd, but it is what is needed. The interesting thing, however, is to give a meaning to that divinity brought to earth.
[…]
The divinity in question is altogether terrestrial. ‘For three years,’ says Kirilov, ‘I sought the attribute of my divinity and I have found it. The attribute of my divinity is independance.’ Now can be seen the meaning of Kirilov’s premises: ‘If God does not exist, I am god.’ To become god is merely to be free on this earth, not to serve an immortal being … If God exists all depends on him and we can do nothing against his will. If he does not exist, everything depends on us.

I think these kinds of lists are really useful for shoegaze newcomers especially who can easily get confused by the scope of shoegaze, particularly in light of the fact that most bands in the genre tend to distance themselves from it. I’m just going to assume that the bands listed are just by way of example and not start a long self-indulgent rant about exclusions from the list and minor disagreements about certain classifications. If anyone wants to pick up on that task, I’d be interested to hear your thoughts though.
I will say however that I’m pleased that Adorable is on the list as it gives me an excuse to post them here, though I never really considered them part of the shoegaze/post-shoegazer scene since, aside from their fuzzy guitars, they had a much more aggressive edge vocally and seemed to sit more comfortably at least initially as part of the new glam/neo glam/nouveau glam rock (*yawn* or whatever, depending on who you spoke to) scene along with Suede and The Verve yet evoked an indie rock sensibility that foreshadowed the impending Britpop explosion. Don’t get me started on whether Suede is Britpop (another tumblr, another time, maybe)….
